When is the expression of prejudice seen as authentic? Perceived authenticity refers to how much one judges another’s behavior reflect beliefs, attitudes, goals, and desires that person. We investigate whether perceived can operate a vicarious justification for prejudice—a way prejudiced people defend statements others. In six studies, was positively related similarly statements: People are more likely label they agree with authentic. develop account “authentic prejudice.” need not justify what socially acceptable; if serves prejudice, it will be reported only when nonnormative. Three studies demonstrate positive relationship between heightened expressed unacceptable. call “authentic” but feel cannot express.
